Nobody wants to be accused of trying to keep up with the Joneses. But sometimes they catch on to a great idea before you have even heard about it. Sometimes a friend or a neighbor installs something that is so cute or useful that you think maybe you should give it a whirl. Here are a few things that other people are doing with their homes that you should consider. (And, who knows, maybe you will be the trend setter next time.) Outdoor Living SpaceYou work hard all day. When you finally have an evening or weekend off, the last place you want to spend it is inside-- especially when the weather is nice. Outdoor living spaces are one of the biggest trends these days. The great thing about them is that you can find an outdoor living solution to work on any budget, whether it is building a deck or an outdoor kitchen. Installing TileIf your kitchen or bath is beginning to feel a bit drab, why not update it with some new tile. Tile is a great way to liven up a space and give it a high-end feel with out breaking the bank. There is such a variety of tile available, you should be able to find something to suit your tastes. Put stone tile on the floors to give a room a rustic feel. A subway tile backsplash can give your kitchen a clean vintage look. Or add glass tiles to the shower to give it a burst of color. Glass ShowersAt one time the big must-have for bathrooms was a whirlpool tub. And while tubs are still nice, they take up a lot of space. Also, most people these days are too busy for a bath. If you are renovating the bath, a glass shower is the way to go. They look super sleek and make the space feel bigger. Stainless Steel AppliancesThe truth is stainless steel appliances have been at the top of everyone's list for a while, and for good reason. They are attractive. They have a clean look and they fit in with most decorating choices. And because they have a brushed finish, they can hide small sins like finger prints pretty easily. Updating FixturesSometimes all a place needs to get a high-end feel is just new fixtures. How much more visually appealing is that big beautiful farmhouse sink with the burnt copper faucet than the old enamel sink with the chrome faucet? How about the wine cellar doors? Or new pendant lighting in place of the old ceiling fixtures? A fresh choice in a few places can bring everything up a notch. Security FeaturesYou may not realize how effective lighting can be at protecting your home. Monsters live in the dark and depend on it to keep from being seen. Installing lighting along your walkways and motion lights around your driveway and garage can do a lot. Not only will it keep you from tripping over yourself when you come home at night, but it will also make potential burglars think twice. If you want to be extra careful, consider an entire home security system. Getting Energy EfficientEnergy efficiency is the new black. Everything from windows to insulation to appliances carry the energy efficiency tag. Energy efficient goods help the environment by requiring less energy to do their jobs. That means less energy to heat your water or cool your home. The less energy that is used, the better for the environment. But energy efficiency is good for your wallet, too. The less energy you use, the less you have to pay for. When you need to replace anything in your home, look for an energy efficient model. People are doing a lot of things for their homes from the purely cosmetic to the incredibly practical. When you see something that you like, whether because it is visually appealing or because it just makes sense, it is okay want to do it too. It is just a sign that you have have either good taste or good sense.
